TCP/IP MCSE Study Guide is a competent explanation of TCP/IP and the popular MCSE elective exam that tests knowledge of the Internet communications protocols. Study this book closely and do the excellent laboratory exercises, and you'll be ready to pass the TCP/IP portion of the MCSE exam. The author breaks TCP/IP into several logical units--general concepts, IP addressing (including routing, subnets, and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol [DHCP]), name resolution (including Windows Internet Naming Service [WINS], Domain Name System [DNS], and NetBIOS) and advanced topics (mainly protocol bridging, Simple Network Management Protocol [SNMP], and troubleshooting). Each topic is covered with plenty of clear, explanatory prose, some concise tables (typically showing parameters), and a number of excellent conceptual diagrams. Step-by-step procedures appear where they are needed, but aren't so numerous as to become overbearing. One would like to see more about integrating NT-based TCP/IP with a legacy Novell NetWare LAN. One neat feature of this book is the orientation of its exercises toward a practice lab. Bulette shows you how to set up a simple experimental network, consisting of one machine running NT Server and one running NT Workstation. He then uses that rig for exercises throughout the book.

As I have said before, there are tons of books to choose from and once again I hit the right one. Although it can improve in some of the expalnations used, the book focuses on the concepts good enough to understand them. I used this book alone with transcenders and scored 833 on the test. So, do I recommed this book? You bet. Good luck.Jay Gonzalez, MCP, At Large

After finding the several typos in the first 4 chapters I quickly lost confidence for the remainder of the book and placed it in the circular file holder. I then purchased a study guide from Sybex and felt better about what I was trying to learn, after all the reason we purchase these study guides is not only pass our Exams but to have a good grasp on how to perform these tasks. I really felt that this book was a waste of time & money to those of us who are trying to learn a subject that affects our future performance and getting information that causes confusion is not the way to go when I'm hanging on to every word as being gospel.yes I was able to figure out the typo's and errors but by the time I had read chapter five I had lost confidence and went to another source for my studies. I do not recomend this book to anyone as there are better ones available to you. I did very well in passing my Exam but no thanks to this book.

A very good book for carefull readers.

The book will teach you everything you need to know about implementing TCP/IP on Windows NT 4.0 and pass the exam for the first time. By studying this book alone only for two weeks I passed the new adaptive TCP/IP exam with score 697 for the first time. I felt that I could easily answer all the questions on the exams as if I were doing the exercises on book. No difficulties at all. The only minus point is that the book was poorly edited and typo errors are spreadout across the book. But any carefull readers will easily find out where those errors are and correct them at the spot. Consider those as additional exercises and you will get your effort paid on the exams. :) I am a CCNA, MCP+I, MCSE.

A well structured book but lacking test essentials

I agree with the rest of the reviewers, specifically regarding the abundance of typos! However, I would recommend any person who wants to pass the 070-59 test to add another book on the same subject to their preparation list. Still, it is possible that a specific test subject will be overlooked by both books...

The only reason this book gets four stars is because of the errors. There were about 8(?) errors in the subnetting chapter. However, the content is so rich, you'll be able to notice these errors yourself. I applaud IDG for putting together the best study guides on the market. You get all you need to pass the three NT exams and the TCP/IP. I will never waste money on Sybex again. The reviewer below is correct, not much on PPTP but, the IDG NT 4.0 MCSE study guide covers this protocol well enough for the test.
