Product Description
This dictionary acts as a reference source for the most significant characters in American literature over the past two centuries. It begins with the first American novel in 1789, "The Power of Sympathy", and ends with Norman Mailer's "Executioner's Song" which won the Pullitzer prize for fiction in 1980. It contains over 11,000 entries in A-Z format, supplemented by an index listing famous series characters such as Tarzan. It also has a three-tiered index, listing authors, their novels, and the characters in those novels.

A GOOD BASIC INTRODUCTION
Rating (3)
Date: 2010-07-24
I received Vol II of a 2 volume set that was ordered. This review concerns
Volume 2 which covers the time period 1961-2000.
The book is divided into three sections. Section I is an alphabetical listing
of characters with a one-line description of them and the name of the book(s) in which they appear. Some of the longer entries have lots of commas and semi-
colons in keeping with the one-sentence format. Jack Ryan, who appears in
several Tom Clancy novels, rates eleven lines.
Section II is an alphabetical title index. If you can't think of a specific
character, you can check the book title/author's name and probably recall the
character.
Section III is an alphabetical author index with book titles for the period
mentioned above. In some instances, such as for Steinbeck, See also Volume I is
indicated.
The book is a useful starting point for recalling some of the characters
about whom you might have read or heard. The book is neither the best nor the
worst.
