Are they alternative-country rockers or alternative rock crooners? That was the conundrum following Rilo Kiley’s 2002 release, The Execution of Things, and with More Adventurous, the band’s first record with major label support, we have our answer. Jolted by the divinely pure vocals of Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett's howling guitar on prospective indie anthems like "Portions for Foxes," the Los Angeles foursome has two fists through the earth in their quest to depart the underground. It's obvious from the opening smack-talk sing-a-long "It's a Hit" that Lewis is the centerpiece of this 11-song pop consignment (leaving the capable Sennett to sing only the acoustic low-fi "Ripchord"), and the unabashed charisma that is her trademark infiltrates throughout—from rockers ("Love and War") to ballads ("Absence of God") to pop ("Accidntel Deth") to Dusty Springfield soul ("I Never"). And while the production is polished to radio-friendly, it fails to dull the charming accessibility of a band that wears progression as a badge. --Scott Holter

Rilo Kiley at their best

In my opinion, this album is Rilo Kiley's strongest offering to date. Hearing bootleg versions of a few of these tracks is why I went to see them in concert in Austin a few years (and it was a great show).

It's one of those albums where I can listen to it at any time of the day on any day and it still makes me feel good. It's ironic how an album with often depressing overtones can make you feel good, but that's just from the music itself. You have everything from "Does He Love You", a wonderfully melo tune with great lyrics, to "Portions for Foxes", an powerfully, upbeat song and probably their best one yet, and everything in between. It's never too over-the-top and there are a few great tracks with great acoustic guitar in them.

I don't know what else to say about this album other than to get it. I'd usually rate each track, but since every track would get a 8, 9, or 10, I don't see the point for this album. If you like Rilo Kiley at all, this album is basically a must-have.

Really Great Album

Jenny Lewis is an amazing vocalist and songwriter. There is nothing amazing about the recordings themselves, but it is some of the best songwriting and performances I've ever heard. The band is really tight and has a lot of emotion in their playing.

SO EASY LISTENING

One of the albums I discovered in 2008 (despite it was recorded a few years ago), that made the top 3 of my choices.
Jenny Lewis is one of my weakness. In her adult age she's become part of my universe with the strength of the songs that form More Adventurous.
GREAT MUSIC to play while driving far with no hurries nor worries.

My favorite song on this whole album is "A Man/Me/Then Jim". The lyrics are so heartbreaking and Jenny Lewis's voice is so solemn. It's probably Rilo Kiley's best song ever, although all of their songs are amazing but this one just stands out, probably because I can't get the song lyrics out of my head. I would definitely recommend this album to anyone.

Can't choose a favorite song!

I was going to say what my favorite song was but I couldn't choose! They are all so great. I would recommend this to anyone that likes Rilo Kiley, Jenny Lewis, or music in general. This is a great addition to my CD collection and I love listening to this album. Portions for Foxes, A Man/Me/Then Jim, and The Absence of God are the ones that REALLY stand out to me as being great though.
